this just in: Cry-baby Father Whines Ironically.

so this guy is trying to get Fahrenheit 451 banned. That's right: he is trying to get Fahrenheit 451 - a book about book-burning, banned - during he 25th annual Banned Books Week - (a celebration of our freedom to read)

He says it's just a coincidence. seems ironic to me, but i probably use the term incorrectly.

Subject:the new iMac
Time:05:37 pm
My office (or, rather, one of my offices) at UCCS just got a brand new iMac from Apple.

...and as much as i am a proponent of expandability, and as much as i LOVE a tower, i think i'm sold.

I was planning on saving up (and begging for contributions come holiday season) for Apple's 23" LCD monitor, as truth be told, i really need a new monitor. My current one is quickly dying, the colors are horribly out of whack, and the usability of it is getting close to zero. ...and i work doing graphic design. this just cant work.

But after using the new iMac for a few days, i've realized it certainly is a hell of a machine. The only real worry i have is that once it becomes outdated, i cannot simply open it up and stick new parts in it to make it last longer. For example, the machine i have right now costs around $1,699 brand new (in 2003) ...i've spent somewhere around $250 in upgrades since i bought it. If i were to have bought it NEW with the specs it has now, it would have costs easily $5,500.

So if i buy a new iMac, i'll use it until i can afford a serious upgrade, and once that happens, that iMac will be of little use to me. i cannot even use the 20" LCD screen that is attached to it once the computer is old, because it doesn't have any sort of input to plug into another computer and just act like a monitor.

So that is really holding me back (that, and not being anywhere near able to afford it right now)

But i think i've made peace with that snafu, and immediately i am going to start doing whatever i can to save up $2,000 and but the iMac i really want. (i could spend less, but end up being unhappy. i could also spend a lot more, but not realistically.)

That is what i want. ...and oh man, do i want it. I even feel it'd be justified, for how much i use my computer for school and work, and all that jazz.

::sigh::

Subject:My Apple Rumor Fiasco / My New Blog
Time:05:01 pm
A little over a week ago i decided i wanted to create a fake Apple Rumor. (for those unfamiliar, every single time Apple holds a media event and debuts new products (or not) there is wild speculation and rumors flying around the internet. there are entire websites dedicated just to posting about apple rumors.)

I made some quick and dirty Adobe Photoshop mock-ups (and for added mysteriousness, took pictures of the mockup with my cameraphone) of what i called the "MacTower" - a lower cost, expandable tower that is half as powerful and half the cost of the MacPro. It's something i wish they'd release, because i an a huge proponent of expandability and upgradeability, but Apple's lowest cost machine that can do these things starts at $2,500; a little way out of reach for me.

I think the machine in my fake rumor is a great idea, but i'll talk about that later (possibly somewhere else.)

Once i had the fake images, i made a blog on my website ( the-ish.com/blog ) and posted a fake story about how i got the images.

Then i contacted Engadget (an "everything technology" blog with probably thousands of readers) and alerted them to the news. They saw right through my ruse, but posted it on their site anyway (which is sort of what i was counting on, as it was a slow news day anyway) ...and then the fun started.

You wouldn't believe the kinds of comments i got. ...i dont want to ruin the surprise, so head over there and read through some comments. (they get better further down the page.) it's crazy.

so much hatred, it just blew me away. talk about a sociologic experiment. :)

I thought i'd share the fiasco with you, hoping someone might find it nearly as amusing as i do.

I also want to mention that i think i'll keep that blog, and start posting my boring technology posts to it, all my Apple stuff that you all may or may not care about. that'll be somewhere i can post "Articles" while this place will remain my dedicated "random-crap-i-want-to-post-somewhere" place, time to time containing a little more personal content.

cheers, livejournal world.
